Tribal Musical instruments of Kerala

Music is universal one. All human community wherever they exist, have a
tradition of music. The form may vary from culture to culture, but the soul of music is
almost same. And such a variation never bar one to enjoy as inter cultural music
performance. So there have a global perspective to all kind of music traditions and
musical instruments.
There have some traditional way to music of tribal people of kerala also ,that is
now in the path of rediscovery. Most of the instruments are made out of bambbo another
one important feature is all are very unique and original with its peculiarities. Some of
them are Pakkanar Vadyam, Mara, Mukknombi, Mazha Mooli, Marinpa,Ankulang, etc

Pakkanar Vadyam:- Pakkanar Vadyam is made out of a group of 10 small Chenda
(Chend; a drum like, percussion instrument)
Mara :- A small chenda(drum like) .It is traditional musical instrument of Pakkanar
Tribe of north Kerala .They wander place to place and do performance of story telling in
the form of song with the small Chenda,It is made out of palm wood and leather.
Mukknombi :- It belong to the kerala tribe called as kadar. Mukknombi, the word
meaning is festival of bamboo .This music instrument is made out of two bamboo
sticks .this tribal instrument is playing by taping the sticks on ground. So it s performance
truly has an ancient trace.
Mazha Mooli :-It is really very interesting one with all ancient characteristics and
originality of it .This is fantastic with it could play the sound of rain, rain with its all
frequencies and also with it could play the sound of stream also with its all frequencies.
Shortly with Mazha Mooli we could play the music of rain and stream .The word
meaning Mazha Mooli is ,’rain hummer ‘.It made out of bamboo, by striking spike into
its nodes and putting some peas into it.
Marinpa :- It made out of two or three bamboo pieces and making square holes with
different size on it .when tape on it according to the position of the hole and its size we
get changing tunes of rhythm.
Ankulang :- It made out of hanging bamboo sticks with different perimeter .

All these are some musical instruments used t4ribal people of kerala , there have
hundreds of its kind in kerala only. It mere a specimens to note an avoidable music
tradition of that marginalized people .
